J. Fair Shuck Quality buggers Tying Materials

Hello. Fly-tier since c. 1987. I first learned about J. Fair Short Shuck Chenille from his nephew, Mike Scott, at his fly shop on Batavia Street in Orange, CA. around 25 - 30 years ago. It is one of several chenilles I use for trout Woolly Buggers and expect to use some day for steelie-buggers. This having been said, your price is about double what competitors charge for an essentially-identical product. I plan one more order that will keep me supplied until retirement. At that point I'll have time to compare Jay Fair vs. Bob Borden (or whoever owns Hareline) glimmer chenilles instead of just sticking with the more-expensive material currently in use. Finally, I consider it a detriment to J. Fair's legacy and product line that his Seal Sub Dub seems to have disappeared from the market, and his dyed grizzly saddle hackle for palmering Denny Rickards Seal Buggers seems only to be offered by a lady shop owner whose retail units are full skins for $80. Not a good way to induce new users. I am 63 y.o. and don't see myself as old and grumpy but some aspects of fly-tying materials supply used to be better.

Also I bought some Long Shuck "medium cinnamon" from Bass Pro / Cabela's and it was the same shade as my existing supply of "dark cinnamon." Don't know if it was a problem with inconsistent dye lots or what. The "medium cinnamon" from SSM matched the reference item in my collection.

Final note: when my online banking record showed a payment to Western Tire & Chain (or whatever company your POS terminal is hooked up to), I was a bit surprised. Even the 2-bit online retailers manage to run charges under their own name. For what it's worth. Mark Oglesby.

I've been tying with Shuck since the late 80's .. always a good material for soo many applications. Besides Bugger & Lake patterns, i use Shuck for So Cal surf applications. The venerable SURF RAT is best tyed with Hot Orange for the original version & Dark Cinnamon for the brown version. Use it in Bass and Catfish patterns as well.. Definitely a long time favorite material. !!!
